Scope and Content

Two connected letters: 1. A handwritten letter in blue ink and on plain paper from Bernard Martin to Dr. McDonald, dated 3-28-88. 2. A copy of a letter from James G. Ashby, Managing Consultant, Grape & Wine Program to Mr. Bernard E. Martin, Kansas City, MO, dated February 5, 1988. It is on the Department of Agriculture, State of Missouri letterhead The state seal is at the top-middle of the page, with the names of the governor and director on either side.

Context

Dear Dr. McDonald, I have been intending to write you a short letter for a considerable number of days. All of a sudden I am motivated by "little things" - its raining - finally - and I have a bunch of (small bunch) 22¢ stamps that I need to take advantage of before the price increases. I am still not through with pruning. Going slow this year, since I am starting new trunks & root systems by layering. I hope this will cut down my loss of trunks to crown gall by putting less crop load on each trunk and root system. When all of this effort shows up on the horizontal wire, each trunk will have 4 ft ^(max 8ft) of fruiting cordon to support. Thanks for inviting me to have lunch with your friends. I really enjoyed the fellows. Easy group to carry on conversation with. Another reason for writing was to send you a copy of the enclosed letter from Jim Ashby. I intended to give you a copy the day I was with you, but I went off without it. Anyhow - Ashby missed the point I made in my letter - I only made reference to having an amateur competition at the state fair. And he still hasn't sent the list of conference attendees with addresses. Thanks again for a nice luncheon, and thanks also for the goodies. The apples are gone, and the raspberry jam goes good with toast for breakfast. And we will be having the Va. Seedling champagne at Easter Sunday breakfast. Have a good spring. Sincerely, ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear Bernard: I appreciate your comments about the Midwestern Regional Grape and Wine Conference. The reason we didn't enclose a name/address list of participants is because there were so many late registrations. (Many register the 1st day at the conference.) We are compiling this nlist and will mail it to everyone who's on it in the next few days. While I very much encourage amateur wine makers and growers to come, I can't lose sight of who we are trying to serve and who we are funded by. The purpose of the conference is to provide instruction to commercial growers and vintners. It's very difficult to provide instruction to such a diverse group of people without boring one or going over the head of the other. One thing to be aware of: this is not a money-making conference. The Department spends $4,000 -$6,000 on this conference in order to keep the registration fees at a minimum. Since we are spending that kind of money, we have to make sure that our primary objectives are met. I like the idea of an amateur wine competition, but I sure don't relish the thought of organizing any paying for it. (There's only one of me, you know.) Perhaps we could get some help from the wine clubs and allow me to just help instead of assuming full responsibility. I'll pass these thoughts on to the committee. Thanks. Sincerely, cc: S. Wayne Yokley, Director, Market Development Division
