A letter from H. P. Olmo, Professor of Viticulture, University of California, Davis to Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., dated May 4, 1971. It is on University of California letterhead.Context
Dear Dr. McDonald:
I am pleased o know that the cuttings of T8-43 have arrived in good condition and hope your weather conditions are favorable so that you can get them established.
I am very interested in your observations in growing the Ruby Cabernet on hardy stock. We do not know whether cold-hardy rootstock would transmit some of its cold resistance to the scion variety, although, this is a question that is frequently asked of us.
As you probably know, Mr Constatine Frank of New York has attributed most of his success to growing vinifera varieties to the fact he uses a hardy rootstock selection of native riparia. It seems to me, that is the rootstock would produce much change in the hardiness of the tender vinifera, it would have been noted long ago in the northern grape growing areas of European countries. I do not know of any such claims. It is conceivable that some winter hardiness could be produced by the particular growth characteristics of the stock. For example, the rootstock that discontinued growth early in the season would also tend to force the early maturity of the top, thus, giving it more opportunity to withstand winter cold.
Sincerely yours,
