Context

Dear Dr. McDonald: Thank you for your letter of January 27, 1982. It was also a pleasure . . . to have had the opportunity to meet iwth you during my visit to Columbia . . . I found your grape growers and viticulturists most enthusiastic and . . . , I was much impressed with what I saw and heard while in Missouri. You folks are certainly fortunate in having a young man of Bruce Zoecklein's caliber. I am sure . . . he he will make several changes in your wine making style that Missoutans will like as well as others who will be buying Missouri wine. I was pleased to learn that Ruby Cabernet vines have done so well and that you have made such a nice wine from that particular variety. In reference to your question regarding V. Amurensis . . . I was told by the Russian scientists that the crosses in which V. Amurensis were used really did not produce varieties that made very good wine. . . . a long term breeding program is necessary until acceptable varieties are made from crosses using V. Amurensis. There is no question as to the winter hardiness . . . Just as soon as I locate a source of this particular species and/or can make arrangements to have them imported from the Soviet Union - - after going through the virus free program, you would certainly have access to them. . . . I will be checking with my counterparts at Davis to see whether or not this species has been taken in. It was nice visiting with you in Columbia, Missouri. Wish best regards, I am Sincerely yours,
