A Xerox copy of a typed letter, from Wilbur to Mr. Ed King, Glenbrook, NV, dated June 26, 1995. It is on Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D. home letterhead.Context
Dear Ed:
Following your kind letter of 19 May, I received the KING ESTATE brochure with a letter from Lauren Feltman giving me the name and phone number of your Missouri distributor. A case of the 1993 pinot gris, 1992 chardonnay and 1992 pinot noir were purchased.
The pinot gris is a bit light on my palate, but is delightful. When we were served pinot gris as Tokay, at the Auberge d'Ill in Alsace, I was most impressed. Of course, the ambiance and the food carried the day.
The chardonnay suits my taste better, and is not over oaked.
The pinot noir should be left in the cradle, so I'm laying some away. It should be beautiful as the tannins mellow. The best pinot noir I've tasted was the 1989 Domaine Drouhin Oregon pinot noir.
May I make one small suggestion concerning the packaging? While the slick clear plastic sleeves on the bottles in the case suggest opulence, they really serve no useful purpose, and are a hazard to a slow witted bottle stacker like me. While stacking in a bin with the sleeve attached, one bottle was not pushed back far enough, and slid to the floor - wasted. Possibly elimination of the sleeve, or use of a non-skid substance would be less hazardous.
Your illustrious team of enologists and viticulurists deserve many kudos, and your wines are truly fit for a KING-the cartoon notwithstanding.
Ed, I am jealous, even envious, of your success. Since 1955 I have been trying to raise grapes that would produce a drinkable wine in northwest Missouri - and I have failed. Maybe it is the weather - or I've been fishing in the wrong lake?
We are proud of your successes - keep it up.
