Context

Dear Mrs. McDonald: I am thankful to you for your letter with the sad news about Doctor Wilbur's passing. I had been hearing from him every several months and missed his notes about our wines and his ideas about improving the process of fermentation and aging. It was so interesting to me that he cared so much for the ancient art. I always had the feeling that he would have preferred to have spent his life making wine but had committed his life to curing people of illness. I wish that I might have known Dr. McDonald better. You will probably remember that I went on a fishing party with Bill Kelley and me from KC and Wilbur's friends from St. Joe. When we returned my first wife (deceased) and Mrs. Kelley came up for a dinner with the returning fishermen. I sold my company in 1985 and retired. My son in Oregon became the owner of several vineyards in Oregon which happened to be forest land which he bought for timber. We started the Winery in 1992 and have increased our production until we are the largest in Oregon. We fermented 3000,000 gallons of wine this past year. Since becoming a wine producer, I have spent many hours learning about the history of wine and the modern techniques of production. I enjoyed reading of your many adventures around the world. You can be thankful that the memories of your many trips are still with you. Thank you for sharing them with me. I have written to Jennifer Maloney, chef at the Museum's cafe' and Carolyn and I will have lunch there when we go to KC for the KC Festival of Wines in April. Last year, Carolyn and I were the featured winemakers - which we enjoyed. Am pleased that our daughter, Shelley participated in the Chiluly affair with some of our wine for the banquet. Sincerely,
