Copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Mr. Erwin Abmeyer, Wathena, Kansas, dated Sept. 27, 1961 The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.Context
Dear Mr. Erwin Abmeyer:
Again I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to you for the Hybrid grapes. These are the first French Hybrids that I have seen in this part of the country. Now that I know that they can be grown, I will try harder. Below I listed the Balling and the total acids of the grape varieties obtained.
Total acid Balling
Seyve-Villard S-276 0.85 21
Ravat 262 1.087 19
Delaware 1.02 21
Couderc 7120 1.08 16.5
Seyve-Villard 18-283
" " 12-327
" " 23-18 1.09 18.5
Seibel 5455
" 10096
From the above readings, it seems as though the Couderc, the Ravat and the mixture of five hybrids, could have matured a little longer on the veins. Even the Delaware was high in acid this year, probably due to our rainy summer.
Thanks again, and I would like very much to watch you prune and care for the grapes. I'd like to learn how.
