Context

A. Dear Mom & family Just a few lines to let you know I'm well and received your letter a couple days ago. No doubt you'll be excited over the starting of today's invasion of France, so am I. But don't start worring; were not in it. I don't expect Germany to fight long now that the actual invasion has started so I may even get a chance to get in on it. There so many troops over here, and have been here for months preparing for this that I don't think we will ever get in the thick of it. I to have a lot of faith and no matter what happens we will have this to look forward to. We'll all be together some day forever. You've often said you'd give anything to take my place, and yet I'm not going thru half what you are. I'd feel ten times worse if I were there and you were here, I know that, because I know whats going on and you just have to guess and wonder. Your the ones that are making the sacrifice not us. B. (upside down at the top of page 2) you dont have to use pen and ink Mom, your letters are quite legible in pencil. I'll write as often as I can to relieve your mind. I only hope you are all as well as I am. It's real chilly again today after a few warm days and quite windy. Could use some of that desert heat right now. How's the garden coming along, are you getting mush out of it besides a lot of work? Hope Maybelle isn't too lonely now that her folks have gone. Her sister is going to visit her and she mentioned going back with her but doesn't know quite what she should do. It would be nice if you could go out and spend a few weeks out there, and would probably do you a lot of good. Do you and Dad think y9ou will ever move out there? It was sweet of M. to send you the nice gift and I'm so glad you write to her. As the English say - I'll have to get cracking so will say good nite. Love to All your son. P.S. Tell everyone hello and give my love to the kiddos. Dont worry Mom. C. The envelope has red and blue stripes between spaces. The lower left corner is stamped rectangular box marked 'PASSED BY U S ARMY EXAMINER 36148'. There is an round embossed orange 6¢ stamp. In the center is an air plane with 'U.S. Postage * Via Air Mail* around the outside.
