Scope and Content

A copy of a letter on onion skin paper from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D. to Mr. C. J. Alley, Associate Specialist, Dept. of Viticulture & Enology, Univ. of Calif., Davis, Calif. , dated November 1, 1967. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the page.

Context

Dear Mr. Alley: Enclosed is a copy of a letter to Henry O. Bennett, Manager, New York State Fruit Testing Co-operative Ass'n., Geneva, New York, which is mostly self-explanatory. Will you please send him the necessary graft sticks for 30 grafts and send the bill to me. To refresh your memory, this past spring you sent me ten graft sticks of Ruby Cabernet which I grafted onto the roots of Baco #1 in my vineyard. All grafts seemed alive until we had two days below freezing the last of April. All of the leafed out grapes in the vineyard froze back. As this result, only two grafts of Ruby Cabernet on Baco #1 roots survived, . . . - sending out scions of 14 - 16 feet, and . . . .a few bunches of grapes which reached a Balling of 22° before the birds got them. . . . . If these scions will last through the winter, then I think I am home free for a grape that can be grown here in Northwest Missouri with which I can make a suitable wine. Don't forget me when the T8-43 has been released. Sincerely,
