Scope and Content

A single page typed letter on onion skin paper from (Mrs. ) Maryan Carlson Maier, R.R. L. to Mr. Emmett McLoughlin, Supt., Memorial Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona, dated July 29, 1955.

Context

Dear Mr. McLoughlin: Having just finished reading a borrowed copy of our book, "People's Padre", I am anxious to have one for my very own. I found your book one of the most intensely interesting life stories that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It is especially interesting to me because I formerly lived in Phoenix and know of some of the struggles you had in order to accomplish your projects in South Phoenix. My interest picked up considerably when I reached the paragraph concerning Drs. Tuveson and Caniglia who were instrumental in starting the V. D. Clinic. Somewhere out of the past those names flashed through my memory and with some difficulty I recalled that they served their internships at St. Joseph's Hospital the year I worked there as a Medical Record Librarian. I arrived from Missouri at about the same time they probably did from Nebraska, in June1936. My sojourn at St. Joseph's lasted until February 1937 when Miss Welnick returned from having been ill, and Dr. Sweek offered me a job at the Lois Grunow Memorial Clinic. Much has gone over and under the bridge since then, including my leaving Phoenix in 1943 to recover from a mental illness. I was much amused when you wrote that a Sister had suggested you see a psychiatrist. Could that nun have been Sister Mary Veronica, by chance? I can hardly believe it would have been Sister Mary Monica. I am afraid your psychiatric care, had you needed it, would not have been of the caliber we find today, as I learned, much to my sorrow, that psychiatrists were few and far between and with little training. Fortunately, I did recover here in Missouri and am again in the medical record library field in a private medical-surgical clinic here in St. Joseph. Last November I persuaded my husband of a few years to make a trip to Phoenix and share with me the pleasure of people and places of interest I once knew so well and to see the new ones that had sprung up since then. High on the list was your hospital and housing project. Am only sorry now we did not take the time to go inside and make our visit known and really see what you have done. At that time my friends told us of your book but it was not available here when we returned. It is now available at our Public Library and for sale at one or our larger book stores. Several months ago a Christian Church Sunday School teacher, who is an M. D., presented your book to his class and even bought a supply for his students to read. Being a Methodist, I am not in the class but my co-worker is and it was through her that my interest in your book was renewed. Would it be asking too much for you to autograph two copies of your book, one for my assistant, Mrs. Virginia Miller, and the other for myself? I am enclosing my check to cover the charges and please use the balance for whatever you see fit. With sincere good wishes to you and your wife, Mary, and may you have continued success in the things that are important to you. (Mrs.) Maryan Carlson Maier R. R. I.
