A Xerox copy of a letter, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to James A. Cook, Department of Vit. and Enol., Davis, Calif., dated November 12, 1980. It is written on Dr. McDonald's office letterhead.Context
Dear Dr. Cook:
Your inter-office memorandum dated 10-27-80 regarding my 1972 Ruby Cabernet arrived last week and my ego has not come back to earth since. Of course I hasten to mention my Ruby Cabernet is the only wine I have been able to produce in Northwest Missouri in the past 25 years, so immediately I opened a half bottle and I agree with your evaluation. I now have 13 half bottles and two full bottles left from my original five gallon varietal batch.
I have been trying to grow Ruby Cabernet grafted on Baco #1 roots since 1966, and only in 1972 did I have 60 lbs. of grapes sufficient to make a 5 gallon varietal batch. Most of the vines winterkill and in the spring I regraft from the fll prunings which I store in my icebox. I have ten vines committed to this project, only one of which has survived from about six years and I use the buds from mthis more acclimated vine for my grafting purposes.
I have 140 vines in my vineyard, which is all I can care for on a hobby basis. Ten vines of each variety with the exception of a Johannesburg Reisling where I only have five vines, as three of them died year before last, and two more in the past winter. The remaining five did produce a few bunches of grapes and hopefully they will learn to live with the Northwest Missouri winter.
All the rest of my grapes are hybrids, and the wine from them has varied degrees of foxiness.
Thank you again for your incouragement. Give my regards to Dr. Olmo and the rest.
Sincerely,Lexicon
