A letter from Henry O. Bennett, Manager, on New York State Fruit Testing Assoc., Geneva, N. Y. letterhead to Wilbur P. McDonald, dated October 4, 1967.
A copy of the letter, on onion skin paper, of Dr. McDonald's reply to Mr. Bennett, dated November 1, 1967. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.Context
Dear Dr. McDonald:
Life members are not required to pay any additional dues. The blue slip should not have been enclosed. The policy that we follow on all Life Memberships is to grant a $1.00 membership premium each year that an order is shipped.
We would be glad to graft Ruby Cabernet on Baco #1 roots on order for you. We would, however, require that you obtain the Cabernet wood and have it sent to us. We would like to comment that in this area we do not feel that Baco is hardy enough to use as a rootstock, and that we recommend the use of 3309. Baco is a very strong grower but this in itself might result in not ripening the wood well enough before cold weather, which would result in winter injury. We do have Baco available for grafting and would be glad to use it if you desire. Our charge for this service would be at the rate of $.95 each. If you are interested, it would be necessary for us to receive your order and the scions by January.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Bennett:
Thank you for your letter of October 4th offering to graft Ruby Cabernet on Baco #1 roots, but recommending the use of 3309 roots. I appreciate your suggestion and you are probably 102% right, so I will be glad to compromised and lets do it fifty-fifty. Will you please graft 15 Ruby Cabernet on Baco #1 roots, and 15 Ruby Cabernet on 3309 roots for me for delivery the spring of 1969.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Mr. C. J. Alley, Associate Specialist, College of Agriculture Experiment Station, Dept. of Viticulture and Enology, University of California, Davis, and am asking him to send you sufficient graft sticks of Ruby Cabernet for these 30 grafts, to be shipped to you by January 1968.
In the past twelve years of my experimental grape growing in Northwest Missouri I have planted over 40 different kinds of grapes. Those on 3306 roots did much better on the average than any of the others. However, Baco #1 seems to like it here. It has been by far the most vigorous and has gone through ten winters without damage. The grape production has only been fair, and the wine produced has been poor. If the grafted scions of Ruby Cabernet live through this winter then I think I can make a decent wine in Northwest Missouri. This has been my object.
Thank you for your interest.
Sincerely,Lexicon
