A Xerox copy of a letter from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Elbert Pirtle, Bowman Wine Cellar, Weston, Missouri, dated May 13, 1980. It is written on Dr. McDonald's letterheadContext
Dear Mr. Pirtle:
This is a belated thank you for forwarding my renewal application for Domestic Wine Production the bureaucrats evidently stuffed in the wrong envelope. This isn't the first mistake they have made and I know it won't be the last.
One of these days I'd like to sit down with you to compare wines. I've been trying to grow a grape that would make a decent dry wine in Northwest Missouri for the past twenty-five years, but I have had only one success. That was the Ruby Cabernet grafted onto Baco #1 roots. Following a mild winter in 1972 I obtained sixty pounds of grapes sufficient for a five gallon varietal batch. Several times in the past I have tried to grow other viniferas withous success. However, I do have six reislings that have survived the past three winters and I may have a few grapes this year. Hope springs eternal.
Thank you for your kindness and consideration.
