A handwritten letter in blue ink, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Swenson/Smith Vines, Excelsior, Minn. dated 10 Feb. 85. It is written on lined paper, with the bottom of the page torn off.Context
Dear Sirs:
Since 1955 I have been trying to grow Vinifera here in Northwest Missouri without much success. In 1972, after two mild winters, not exceeding -7° F., I had 60 pounds of Ruby Cabernet, grafted on Baco #1 roots, to make a 5 gallon batch of wine. That has ben my only success.
I understand that you have been propagating winter hardy grapes, and I would like to know if they are Viniferas, or Hybrids, and their degree of winter hardiness. Here in St. Joseph Missouri, most winters get to -10° -15°F, but every second or third year it goes below -20° to 25 F - sometimes for several days running.
If could purchase from you, 10 vines each, of a winter hardy red and a white Vinifera, I would be very appreciative.
Sincerely,Lexicon
