Context

Hi Dr. McDonald, I had a nice surprise back in September, thought maybe you should know about it. I was rummaging through the freezer and I found that little package of deer liver pate' you brought her last January. Some people thought I shouldn't be eating it, fearing there might be dire consequences, maybe even death. Well, I thought I should at least sample it, and let me tell you I savored every bite. Was able to stretch it out 2-3 weeks to have with a Martini. Shared the last of with Glenn and Anita Wetzel when they came to pick some grapes they bought from me. They thoroughly enjoyed it. (In case you don't recognize the name, they were with us at the grape & wine conference last January. Hope you had a good crop this year. I harvested half of what I did in 1988. Not to sure of all the reasons. Probably a combination of the 1988 drought, the cold temperatures on April 7-9 (22°-24°) resulting in primary bud kill, and some trouble with Oxidant Stipple (ozone injury). I tried folion application of a 20-20-20 fertilizer in mid season and it seemed to help the new leaves. I think I'll lay down a ground application of 20-20-20- in November & December. The experts say keeping nitrogen at optimum levels helps in situations of Oxidant Stipple. Worst affected varieties were Chaunfourair and Villard Noir. Leon Millot came through real good. VB slightly affected, and no effect on GW-9. We just got back from a trip through Wisconsin and the upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the lower (went clear to Copper Harbor) Michigan fruit growing areas along the Lake Michigan shore. I have a friend that lives in Berrien Springs - took us to the neighboring orchards and vineyards (mostly concord) and gotr to ride atop one of the grape harvesters. Quite a machine. Also stopped at the Tabor Hill, St Julian, and Warner wineries. Tabor Hill was the most interesting. Hope all has been well with you and Eleanor, not too bad here health wise. - Millie has been having a little trouble with right leg & hip but seems much improved of late. Looks like I may have some decent white wine but I sure am having a time with the red. I get downright disgusted with my red wine making. Best wishes to you and Mrs. McDonald.
