A copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Mr. Nicholas Reinprecht, Eisenstadt, Austria, dated June 26, 1968. The letters COPY in red ink are printed down the left hand side of the page.Context
Dear Mr. Reinprecht :
Thank you for your nice letter, and I am sorry to hear of your recent severe winter and loss of vines. . . . I have been trying to grow the Vinifera Grapes in Missouri and those that grow in the summer usually freeze in the winter. This past January the temperature got down to 14 degrees below zero F., killing most of the Vinifera Grapes . . . ; only three or four survived.
Hope your fine niece Eva is completely well and feeling good again. Sorry to hear of her illness.
During the past year I have become a member of the Wine and Food Society, . . . my home is 50 miles north of Kansas City. This past month at the Hotel Muehlebach in Kansas City, an Austrian dinner was held, but the red wine was rather poor French wine, much too strong in Tannin, and too astringent. As my spirits rose during the evening I offered . . . . Would you be so kind as to sell me 10 or 20 cases of your "Ruster Burgunder". Or . . . another red wine you think is better please may I buy some.
I am not familiar with the procedure of importing wine, but understand that it can be done. If you will sell me some wine, then write me . . . stating your intention of shipping 10 or 20 cases. . , the number of bottles per case and the number of ounces per bottle. Your bill for the wine and shipping charges should be sent to me direct and I will pay you . . . The wine may then be shipped to D. Recher & Co., . . . ., Chicago, Illinois . . . , who is an importer of wines. (They) will . . . ship the wine to me after I obtain permission to import . . . into the State of Missouri. The shipping charges . . . will be handed by D. Recher & Co.
Please let me now if you can let me have some of your best red wine and I will start the proceedings from this end . . . .
Sincerely,Lexicon
