A copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Dr. Wilbur McDonald, to Mr. Roland E. Recher, D. Recher & Co., Chicago, Illinois, dated October 28, 1968. The letters COPY in red ink are printed down the left hand side of the page.Context
Dear Mr. Recher:
Dr. John R. Forgrave advised me to write you concerning all of my wine importing problems, as per your telephone conversation with him last week. My problem is how to import a dozen cases or so, of a good vintage "Ruster Burgunder" from Austria, some of which is to be used at the annual Austrian Dinner held every May, by the Kansas City Branch of the Wine and Food Society, at the Hotel Muehlebach in Kansas City. The remainder to be used personally. To this end, I have written my Rotarian friend, Mr. Nicholas Reinprecht, St. Rochusstrasse 34, Eisenstadt Bergenland, Austria, and following is a copy of his letter of October 2nd as well as I can decipher it:
"Dear Dr. McDonald:
Excuse me please, that I am in my returne so late; but I had during the time so much work, that I
worked daily till 8 o'clock p.m. Therefore I was always very tired, you must understand. It was just the
time to pick up the cherries, apricots, plums and now the nuts. Since the 1st of October is the vintage.
The grapes are very good but now I am afraid that they begans to rots. The weather is in the moment
very terrible - the most time it is raining and I need so much the sun. I have so always my sorrows and
my work. I hope you can forgive me.
And now to your question? I can send you 10 bottles of wine, this is allowed. I have to regard that
bottles and the weight of jars is only 20 kg., because more is not permitted. The price of the bottle wine
is F22._. The money for sending from me to you I can't say in the moment. Please write me if I can send
you our "Ruster Burgunder".
Sincerely,"
Following receipt of this letter, I wrote to Mr. Harry W. Seamans, Coordinator of Organization Liaison, Office of Public Services, Department of State, Washington, D. C. 20520, asking him to obtain any information as to why I could not import more than 10 bottles of "Ruster Burgunder", and that if it was the absolute limit, could I obtain 10 bottles per week, per month, or per year. As yet, I have had no reply.
I have not yet answered Mr. Reinprecht's letter of October 2nd as I have been waiting further information on this problem. Anything you could do to help would be appreciated.
Sincerely,Lexicon
