A copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Mr. Nicholas Reinprecht, Eisenstadt, Austria, dated November 11, 1968. The letters COPY in red ink are printed down the left hand side of the page.Context
Dear Mr. Reinprecht :
It was a pleasure to receive your letter of the 2nd of October in which you offered to send to me 10 bottles of "Ruster Burgunder", "as more was not permitted". Immediately I sought more information as to why you could only send 10 bottles. I wrote to our State Dept. and received a reply that an importer of wine in the United States should be able to import unlimited quantities of wine as long as I could obtain permission from the Missouri State Liquor Control authority to import it into the State of Missouri. A letter was then written to Mr. Roland Recher of D. Recher & Co., 3246 N. Halsted St., Chicago, Ill., an "Importer of Wines", concerning my problem, and received from him a copy of a letter mailed to you on Nov. 4th. I hope you will be able to ship to him 12 cases of your best "Ruster Burgunder" which he will import for me, taking care of all custom duties, payment to you, taxes and the like.
It is a pity that this was a very poor wine year in France, so that they were unable to hold the auction at Beaune. I hope that the poor weather did not extend into Austria and that you received the necessary sun for the harvesting of grapes.
Thank you for your trouble in sending me your wine. If we find that the legal red tape is not too great, maybe I will be able to import more in the future.
My best regards to you and Eve.
Sincerely,Lexicon
