A copy on onion skin paper of a letter to Mr. Henry O. Bennett, Mgr. New York State Fruit Testing Cooperative Assn, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M.D. dated March 29, 1960.Context
March 29, 1960
Dear Mr. Bennett
I realize it is late to be getting in an order for spring shipment, but the snow here in St. Joseph has been two feet deep on most of my garden, only melting off in the past three days so that I could check the plants for winter kill.
From the plants that I have planted in the past four years, the Fredonia are doing well, the Portland not so good, the Seyve-Villard 5-276 not very good . . . The Yates are doing fairly well . . . The Himrod Seedless are not doing well either. The Siebel 9110, Seneca, and Golden Muscat . . . . The Ruby and Schuyler are in about the same shape. The Interlaken Seedless, however, are not doing very well either. All in all, the Fredonia . . . . None of them have produced yet of course . . . . but I should have grapes by a year from this summer.
I need the following grape stock for replacement of those that have died, for the spring:
Himrod Seedless - 2 Portland - 3
Yates - 1 Fredonia - 2
Romulus Seedless - 2 Ruby - 1
Seyve-Villard 5-276 - 4 Schuyler - 1
Interlaken Seedless - 1
I noticed that the Seyve Villard 5-276, Portland and Ruby are not listed in the price list for this year. If you cannot furnish . . . Also please send me what ever grapes you have in this group . . . .
I am extending my grapes a bit this spring and would like to have 20 more vines of Baco No. 1 and 20 vines of Foche.
Would you please ship what you can of this order and bill me accordingly.
Sincerely,Lexicon
