Context

Dear Wilbur; It was very nice to hear from you and to learn that weather in Missouri is still as always. The only time I was in Missouri was on our way to Mississippi to visit my wife's family. It was a hot bug filled summer night and the highway had just been repaved (no white line). Your description sounds much better. Time really flies - over two weeks since we got back. The following monday I had to make a hurried trip to Tampa for some consulting with Coca-Cola Nestle Refreshment Co. on some new drinks they are considering then the following wednesday to Modesto for some consulting with Gallo and last week an economist associated with the AID program to Egypt brought in some wine for me to evaluate-worse than you could imagine. One wine smelled like rotting vegetables or like an uncleaned urinal, awful. All were far poorer than any we tasted in South America. Went up to my cottage on the Russian river, close to the ocean for several days. Pulled weeds and in general got it so it looks like some one might live there. I promise myself every year I will spend more time there, it has the near perfect climate and you can grow just about anything; but I always seem to have these opportunities that I can't turn down. Before I forget to tell you Wilbur, it was a real pleasure to have you and Eleanor along. Your assistance with the repair and care of the old and infirm and the young and careless made the trip much easier (sounds like the title to soap opera). 1966 was a very good year for California wines. To bad that they have gone to drip irrigation in most of the coast country vineyards and don't have the great vintages anymore; just all standard ordinary good vineyards. It is the rare unirrigated mountain vineyards which will produce the great wines now. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________
