A hand written double sided letter in blue ink on plain paper from Bernard Martin to Dr. McDonald, dated Aug. 5 1988.Context
Dear Dr. McDonald,
All is well with both Millie and I. We are getting along totally well. Hope all is well with you and Eleanor. I suspect you have been on some more interesting trips and we will be anxious to hear about them. And give my regards to the lunch bunch.
I have been intending to reply to your letter of 6 April 88. I set it in the rainy day pile of things to be done - you know the rest of the story. The rainy day pile was recently renamed the "hot, dry, afternoon pile". My worst fears are that it won't outlast the hot dry - then its back out to the vineyard, or under the shade trees.
Thanks for the critique on the GW-9 wine. I have attached production date to a copy of your letter. I hope critique will help improve the result from this years crop., which incidentally will be at least double last years. Do you suppose as the vines get older, the wine will improve? - assuming the winemaker improves. The vines are in their 5th leaf - no I think its the 6th. I have a couple of red wines I would like for you to evaluate or critique. A Leon Millot bottled about 3 months ago, and a Charbourien bottled this past week.
I haven't opened up any of the sparkling wine you gave me. I'll have to get some sparkling wine makers from our amateur wine makers group together for this. On July 16 . . . we did have our amateur wine makers group over for a . . . Champagne Breakfast. . . . . Twenty eight people drank 14 bottles of the bubbly . Went over well - . . . I had visions of . . . a 100°F day looming ahead of us.
Its been an eventful summer - son . . graduated from St. Louis Univ. . . . studying for PHD next year. Our first grand child arrived . . . And we attend another reunion of the 8th Armored Division, . . . This is always a nice affair, . . . It provides some mixed feelings, as I see a group of men, . . who in their youth were a seemingly reckless and drunken tank crews . . . . . . One of the fellows and his wife stopped by just this past week, . . . Had been all the way to (over)
San Diego after the reunion, . . . He grew grapes and other crops in Michigan, all of which he turned over to his offspring.
One of the most respected members of the 8th Armored Division Assoc. is the former CO of the 78th Medical Battalion. His medical corpsman performed so well in our combat operations . . . now a very lively 86 or 87 has attended every reunion. . . .
Clayton Cone - the name sounds familiar. Isn't he the friend you introduced me to last January at 4 seasons? He made Wines&Vines . . . Magazine in the Scott Labs advertisement. I still have the yeast, and I have got to figure out which yeast to use on the red and white wines. . . . .
Looks like I'll be harvesting Leon Millot Rouge in the next day or two. . . . . I have a hell of a time with this grape in trying to get the acid down. I hedged the canopy 3 times this year and there has been lots of sunlight on all leaves and clusters. The berries are fairly soft . . .
Looks like my crop this year may be 1200 + pounds . . . I took quite a few trunks and cordons to use for layering to propagate 2nd & 3rd trunks. I would like to get down to 4 to 8 ft of cordon per trunk. . . . .
Looks like my best variety is going to be the GW-9. It produces a nice open canopy and doesn't have the disease problems of any of the other varieties. Villard Noir also looks good.
Better quit now - don't want to crowd too much on to this little piece of paper. You and Eleanor have a good rest of the summer.Lexicon
