Scope and Content

A letter from Mark Miller to Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., dated 2 May, 1969. It is on BENMARL VINEYARDS letterhead, Marlboro, New York.

Context

Dear Dr. McDonald: Delighted to hear from you. I remember Mrs. McDonald's visit to New York. We met briefly at her uptown hotel as I recall. I'm sorry to have missed seeing you on your subsequent New York visit. At that time we were no doubt still in Europe where we lived for about five years - painting, touring vineyards, and studying. I managed to get home once or twice a year to oversee vineyard work. However, in spite of my efforts the vineyards showed the lack of really loving interest and now we are working very hard to raise production as well as increase our plantings to include some vinifera. I was very interested to hear of your trials with Ruby Cabernet and particularly to note that Baco served successfully as a rootstock. Since returning we've constructed a new farm office and winery on the upper hillside of our vineyard land where we're setting out to build a small business with, you might say, an open-end plan. We're starting with home winemaker's supplies, hoping to grow into a winery. We aim, at present, to serve mostly our local region and therefore have not entered into competitive price race with larger suppliers. We do have our line of wine art, however, which is exclusive with us and we place a great emphasis on the sale of reproduction to any winemaker, professional and amateur, who enjoy the theme of wine in art. Good luck with your vines. I'll be glad to exchange views and news with you about them, but of course Wagner is the penultimate source of advice about them. Sincerely,
