Scope and Content

A copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to H. P. Olmo, Professor of Viticulture, University of California, Davis, dated February 26, 1975. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.

Context

Dear Dr. Olmo: Please put me straight, isn't the accompanying photograph an excellent illustration of the leaf curl virus? Progress report on the T8-43 and Sereksia in Northwest Missouri: Following the 16 day period of below zero weather with a low of -25 degrees below zero on January 12, 1974, one of the 3 Sereksias did not survive. The other two sprouted from the buds at the ground level. . . . From these sprouts they attained about twenty-six to twenty-eight inches of growth this past summer . . ....... . . . Much the same happened to the T8-43 as all of the wood above ground level was killed by the cold, but they did restart at ground level and put out up to forth inches of growth, all survived. This winter has been very mild and we have had no readings below zero except for a very short period. There has been no sustained cold, and I am anxious to see what the T8-43 and Sereksia will be this spring. Do you have any more cold resistant varieties or cloned such as you mentioned from the Geilweilerhof station that you can let me have for a trial? While my success rate is low it is still fun to try. Sincerely, encl.
