Dear Dr. Cook:
Enclosed is a recent article in the Kansas City Times which will bring you up to date on my viticulture in Northwest Missouri. The Ruby Cabernets just will not survive the winters here if left to their own devices. So far I have managed to get five vines through the past winter and obtained sufficient grapes to make bout a gallon and a half of wine. The grapes had a Balling of 20, and a total acid of 1.4r. Probably I should have left them on the vine longer, but the birds had me scared.
An article by Dr. Brent H. McCown, horticulturist at the Universe of Wisconsin, indicated that some of the peroxidases in the winter hardy plants differed from those found in the winter susceptible plants, was found recently in a small newspaper called "Dateline and Science". It suggested the possibility of changing the peroxidases to make plants more winter hardy. Is there anything being done at Davis along these lines?
The American College of Surgeons Meeting will bring me to San Francisco next week, hope to be able to pay you a visit, next Thursday or Friday. Being forewarned is being forearmed.
How about some T8-43 vines to try out here in Northwest Missouri.
Sincerely,
Enc.Lexicon
