Description

Vol II pg. 43A Letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George sharing details of the collection she is wishing to sell. Jan. 6th, 1910. Mr. Harry L. George, Room 201 Saxton Bank Bldg., St Joseph, Mo., Dear Sir: – I will take a few moments to write you especially regarding my Alaskan Colleciton. The 1135 pieces loaned the Dept. of the Interior for exhibition in the Alaskan Bldg., at Seattle Fair was entirely Eskimo material. The entire collection of 533 numbers is cataloged with reference to the Bureau of Ethnology Reports, giving page plate number, etc. of most of the specimens’ There are varieties of all tools used, fishing and hunting implements, models of boats, food dishes, household utensils, clothing, including a magnificent feather parka, personal adornments, games, bags, hunting scores, quantitites of ivory articles, fine collection of spoons, ivory carvings, snares, etc. The articles in this collection were brought from Alaska over 40 years ago. Oney a few of the specimens are under 30 years old. The estimated value of the lot is about $1200 but I would dispose of same to a museum or collector for a net figure of $500. Besides the Eskimo Collection I have a large number of Haida and other Alaskan rattles ranging in price from $6 to $25 each. #2 Bows and arrows, $6 to $12. Old slate and wooden carvings $5 to $15. Wooden food dishes $2 to $12. Wooden feed boxes $5 to $15, gambling games from $2 to $20. Old drums $6 to $20. Paddles $3 to $5 each. Ceremonial garments $15 to $30. Ice scoops, picks and other implements $2 to $12. Fine spoons, $3 to $15. In fact I have hundreds of choice old pieces, including some splendid boat models fully decorated, and implements for boat making: besides many ceremonial objects of great interest to a collector. I am sure that if you make a trip to California soon that you would find almost everything which you have been looking for right here. I have been so busy that I have not had time to look thru my films to have a few more photographs printed, which I think would be of interest to you. Very truly yours, Grace Nicholson
