Letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George discussing what tribes and areas from which she can provide baskets.
Dec. 12th, 1909.
Mr. Harry L. George,
201 Saxton Bank Bldg.,
St Joseph, Mo.,
My dear Sir: –
I am pleased to receive your favor of the 1st instant inclosing list of tribes whose work you are securing. I have not had time to go over the list carefully, I note especially in California that you desire, for instance Calpella, Calin Creek, Gualula, Kabinape, Little Lakes, Navarres, Petter Valley, Yokaia. These are all sub-Pomo tribes and you name them according to location instead of linguistic stock. At the same time a number of these sub-tribes have distinguishing features in their basketry, and I have specimens which are typical and which unquestionably come from the localities which you indicate.
I am terribly rushed with my Christmas trade but this will soon be over and then I shall have ample time to give to the Basket work.
I have placed aside a good old specimen of Lummi, work, Hoh, Quits, Tulalip and Squaxim work, as these are very rare. A good old Maricopa and Cocopa.
You mention having a wooden spoon of the Seminoles. Are you adding other specimens besides basketry to the collection?
Can furnish everything you desire from California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Thompson Riv. and some from Oregon. Plenty of material from Alaska from which to select.
Very truly
