Letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George regarding the "celebrity" of the Indian woman Ramona and availability of various baskets.
June 16th, 1909.
Mr. Henry L. George,
Rooms 201 Saxton Bank Bldg.,
St Joseph, Mo.,
My dear Mr. George,
I have just returned from a trip among the Indians and hasten to reply to your favor of the 31st ultimo.
I note your inquiry regarding Ramona. The photo sent you is not the Ramona mentioned by Helen Hunt Jackson. The fact is the Ramona so often quoted by lecturers and who goes about exhibiting herself at Fairs, etc. is an old Indian woman whose husband happened to get into a horse stealing scrape and was killed somewhat after the manner of the H. H. J. story. Story tellers and some Basket dealers have made considerable of this, and pawned off hundreds of Baskets made by different Mission Indians as Ramona Baskets. Ramona herself is a very poor weaver.
I should advise you to fill in your collection of Alaska Baskets whenever you have the opportunity to secure good specimens. Then when you return if you will kindly send me a list of the Baskets I will be able to fill in the rare ones you do not secure.
Ute Baskets and Paiutes are distinctly different. I will gladly place aside a few genuine Ute specimens for you to be sent when you return from your trip.
I may make a hurried trip as far as Seattle. Please keep me posted as to your whereabouts and if I am in the same locality will try and see you.
With all good wishes for your hunting
Very truly yours
