Letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George regarding her recent basket collection and her recent trip to visit the tribes of Northern California.
August 15, 1908.
Mr. Harry L. George,
315 Francis Street
St Joseph, Missouri,
Dear Sir: -
Miss Mary T. Bryan, of Badlands, Calif., forwards your letter of August 1st, with reference to your Collection of Indian Baskets which you wish to perfect. She writes at the bottom “I am sure you are just the person this gentleman is seeking”.
This is probably true, as I have over 3000 fine Baskets in stock; every tribe from Alaska to Mexico being represented in my Collection: every weave and almost every design and all prices. I am sure if you will let me know just what your wants are I can supply them. Please state whether you wish fair, good or fine specimens.
I have just returned from two months among the Indians of Northern California among the Karok, Yurok, Tolowa, Redwood, Hupa, Patawat, Pit River, Maidu, Pomo, Mono[?], and other sub-tribes too numerous to mention. In fact for the past five years my buyer and I have spent four to five months among the Indians collecting museum specimens and the finest Baskets. I have furnished most of the leading Collections of the world Baskets for the past five years, do all of the collecting of Northwest Coast material for Peabody Museum, Cambridge, Mass.
I have also sold the Penna. Museum, Cincinnati and other leader Museums a large number of their finest specimens.
You will appreciate my enthusiasm when I state that on the trip this summer I walked in 5 days 75 miles over the steepest mountain trails, with the thermometer ranging from 110 to 118 in the shade after my material.
Awaiting your reply with interest, I am
Very truly yours
