Description

Letter to Miss Sara Avery McIlhenny from Harry L. George expressing gratitude for information and photographs. Vol II pg. 102V Many thanks for yours of May 17th, also the information therein contained in regard to the Attakapa Indians and their work. I am returning to you today by mail the two photographs which you kindly sent me. In a publication made y the Smithsonian Institution in 1908 there is a plate devoted to Chetimache basketry which will answer my purpose for all time. Should I desire to order anything different from what I have, I can tell from this just exactly what to add to my collection. However, I recently purchased from the Mohonk Lodge, Colony, Oklahoma a number of pieces of Chetimache basketry which I have added to my collection and now have everything I need for except the trunk shaped baskets. I have been trying for a long time to secure a piece of this class of work made by the Choctaw Indians and one day this week received a small piece from a correspondent I have in California. I have written to the address in New Orleans (which you kindly gave me) in regard ro this matter, and may be able to secure others. In the publication referred to Government has published a plate giving a number of illustrations of what is called Attakapa twilled baskets, and I see no difference between these and the baskets I received from Colony, Oklahoma.
