A 4-page handwritten letter to Harry L. George from Sara McIlhenny discussing available baskets. Vol II pg. 102Q
Dear Sir
My sister Mrs. Sidney Bradford has handed me your letter of recent date as I have undertaken the charge of the baskets of Chetimaches Indians (mistakenly called Attakapa.)
I have now on hand a very large assortment of both double weave & single weave baskets, all dyed with natural vegetable coloring & will gladly send you good specimens if you can give me an idea of what price you wish to pay for them; the range of prices are, for the double weaves trunk shape from $8.00 to $1.20, box shape, from $4.75 to .45cts, cigar cases from 60cts to to 85cts; of the single weaves open square from 2.00 to to 20c fanners from 2.20 to 20c mats, from .20 to .80 ; heart shape baskets, from .50 to $1.00; they also make single weave scrap baskets, solid & handsome 16 inches high, for $2.20.
I am sending you under another cover a photograph of some of the baskets & one of the weavers; their patterns are unique & are all named. You can get the Choctaw baskets through the Christian Woman's Exchange in New Orleans, but they use aniline dyes entirely I regret to say.
Hoping to receive your order ay an early date, & assuring you a good selection, I am very truly yours
