Two related letters. The first is a copy of a letter, on onion skin paper, from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Ciba-Geigy Corporation, Ardsley, New York, dated April 26, 1971. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.
The second letter is from H. J. McElhone, Specialty Chemicals Dept., in response to Dr. McDonald's inquiry. It is dated May 19, 1971 and is on Ciba-Geigy letterhead, dated April 26, 1971.Context
Dear Sirs:
As per your advertisement in the "American Journal of Enology and Viticulture",please may I have a sample and technical brochure on the usage of Irgazyme.
I have been an amateur enologist for the past seventeen years, trying to grow grapes that will produce a decent wine in Northwest Missouri. Noone has ever done this before and I have not met with much success to date.
The Viniferas all winter kill in this location, but I do have Ruby Cabernet grafted on to Baco #1 about three feet above the ground which I lay down and cover in the winter time., thus getting them through the winter. I have been able to make a fairly decent wine from Seibel #5279 and from Seyve-Villard 5-276. These have proven to be the least foxey in this area. The Missouri Reisling has produced a fairly decent wine, but it is very difficult to press even with the addition of straw, excelsior, or rice hulls. Would pectonase aid in this problem?
Sincerely,

Dear Dr. McDonald,
We are pleased to receive your letter of April 26th, concerning your interest in IRGAZYME pectin enzymes as generated by our advertisement in the "American Journal of Enology and Viticulture".
We are directing to your attention 4-oz, complimentary samples of IRGAZYME 20c and 20m for our evaluation. Our technical bulletin describing IRGAZYME enzymes is enclosed. In a few weeks, a new IRGAZYME technical bulletin will be issued which describes IRGAZYME 20m, a water soluble form. This product is one half the activity of IRGAZYME 20c described in the enclosed bulletin (400,000 units/gram vs 800,000 units/gram). We will send you the new technical literature when available.
This opportunity to be of service to you is greatly appreciated.
Very truly yours.Lexicon
