A two-page letter from Toni G. Moran, Missouri Wine Industry Development Specialist, Missouri Department of Agriculture, Jefferson City, Missouri to Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., dated October 13, 1980. Dear Dr. McDonald:
Thank you for your letter dated October 6, 1980. I believe that we have visited once before and just yesterday, you were in my thoughts.
I had been reading the acknowledgements in Leon Adam's book 'Wines of America' and was delighted to see your name among those who contributed to his fine book.
Yes, we really do have seventeen commercial wineries. Enclosed you will find two brochures, one printed by the Missouri Vintners Association and one by the Missouri Division of Tourism. For your convenience, I am also enclosing a winery list with phone numbers.
You will notice that we have omitted your name from the list for it was my understanding that your winemaking was more a home operation rather than commercial. If I am wrong, please correct me for we love to see our list of commercial wineries expanding as it has in the recent past.
There are several home winemaking operations which I hope some day will be going commercial. Presently, I am aware of at least three more wineries which will be opening in the near future - somewhere between one and two years.
Enclosed is the up-to-date spraying schedule for Northwest Missouri that you requested. I am also enclosing a press release announcing the first Department of Agriculture Extension Enologist, Bruce Zoecklein. Bruce is officing in the Jefferson City Wine Advisory Board Office one day a week but is basically working out of Missouri University, Columbia, Horticulture Department where he has laboratory facilities. Below you will find the appropriate phone numbers where he or I can be contacted.
