Letter from Grace Nicholson to Harry George discussing specific Indian tribes.
Dec. 12, 1910.
Mr. Harry L. George,
201 Saxton Bank Bldg.,
St Joseph Mo.,
Dear Sir: –
In reply to your letter of the 8th, with reference to the difference between the Panamints and the Saline Panamints. Would state that they are both in Inyo Co., California. Saline Valley lying northeast of Gwen’s Lake and just west of the Cottonwood range, which skirts the upper part of Death Valley on the west. Just south of Cottonwood range and between it and the Panamint range in Emigrant Springs in the middle of Death Valley. The Panamint range, where most of the Panamint indians live is just west and bordering the southern part of Death Valley. Death Valley itself extends from the Nevada-California State line, southward to the end of the Panamint Range, and between the Panamint Range and the Nevada line.
The Saline Valley Panamints are Valley Indians and have intermarried with the Piutes and the Death Valley Panamints live in the mountain range and are mostly renegades.
Very truly yours.
