Scope and Content

A hand written double sided letter in blue ink on lined paper from Bernard (Martin) to Dr. McDonald, dated 12-5-90

Context

Dear Dr. McDonald, Thanks for your nice letter of August 5, and my apologies for not having replied sooner. I appreciate your comments on the bottle ofGW-9, know known as CHARDONEL. I am sure you have seen some writings on the naming and release of the variety by Cornell Univ. I hope you have had a good year, not only with your health, but also with your vines, amd also your interesting trips, other than one you described in your letter - Turkey. Hope by now Eleanor's leg has healed. And I hope you were finally able to get the walnut tree out of your roof. The year for us has been one that I don't exactly want to repeat next year - at least some aspect of it.. To much pressure. It all started with the revamping part of the vineyard - changing of row direction on the north half. Thats still going on, with the hope of completion by summer next year. Also taking out some reds, putting in more whites - Melody, Vidal, and some more Chardonel, (GW-9) But what really caused me to get "tangled up in the spokes" was 2(two), two week TRIPS with the harvest sandwiched in between. The first TRIP in July started with the 3 day 8th Armored Division Reunion to which we took on a trip to the Lake Erie Islands, Niagara Peninsula (good grape & wine area) of Canada, and the Finger Lakes. We did this with Millie's sister & her husband from Virginia. Then cause the tail end of the growing season, and harvest after which we spent two weeks in Italy visiting my many relatives from South of Rome, Rome, north of Treute, and north of Venice, all of which grow lots of grapes. The vineyard north of TreUte are all on mountain slopes (south facing slopes) on PERGOLA type trellis. Beautiful. The aftermath of that trip has me in its final grips yet today with thank you notes ^(IN ITALIAN) ^ this makes it a little tougher yet, and Christmas cards. The later for me is tough, because I am really not much for thank you cards and Christmas cards. Anything involving sitting at a desk isa pain. My low back is telling me that right now. Grape crop this year was good. - Quality was fairly good, quantity was down^some, because of the revamping situation but still my second best. Next year, quantity should be best ever, unless we have some "wrongful" intervention by M. Nature. Anyhow, travel plans for 1991 are -0- (zero), except for the 8th Armored Div Reunion. To you and Eleanor - a Merry Christmas and a happy new year - from Millie & I (Yeah - I guess I can still having fun!)
