Scope and Content

A hand written double sided letter in blue ink on white lined paper from Bernard Martin to Dr. McDonald, dated 4-15-91.

Context

Dear Dr. McDonald, Thanks for your nice day last Thursday. I enjoyed the lunch with the guys at the Benton Club. After I left St. Joseph, the mist or light rain ceased - not a drop the rest of the way. Thanks also for the bread - its already been eaten - had lots of help over the weekend. Also Millies bottle of Mish-Mash disappeared with our steak dinner Sat eve. Got the vines planted Friday AM. ahead of the rain. Hope they get going real good. And thanks for all the bottles, now I need to concentrate on getting my white grape production up. I have enclosed some ^reading material - copy for Phil Rice and one for you. I sent a copy to Jack Tootle. This is in connection with The Land Institute at Salina Ks and the concern for the loss of topsoil. I also mentioned in my note to Jack another book - The Control of Nature" by John McPhee One section of it deals with the Mississippi River and its watershed of 42% of the U.S. The load of silt it carries has caused its level to raise, and the Corp of Engineers have continually raised the dikes, particularly from Morgan City La. to its delta in the gulf. Additionally the Corps have built a loch at Morgan City that lowers ships or barges 30' ft to the Atchafalaya river to the west. The purpose of all this work is t keep the Atchafalaya River from "capturing" the Mississippi and stranding much of the industry & commerce between Morgan CIty and New Orleans. All because of the top soil from the watershed. Also the delta is so far out in the gulf that it is spilling over the Continental Shelf! Looks like our future generations have got some real hard thinking ahead of them! Thanks again for everything. Regards to Eleanor. Sincerely
