A copy of a letter on onion skin paper from Wilbur P. McDonald, M. D., to Dr. H. P. Olmo, Professor of Viticulture, University of California, Davis, dated March 9, 1971. The letters COPY in red ink are down the left hand side of the paper.Context
Dear Mr. Olmo:
Thank goodness Dr. Cook has time to thumb his old correspondence because I thought maybe I had been forgotten. Yes, I am still interested in obtaining cuttings of T8-43 and other vinifera cross that you might think will be winter hardy here in Northwest Missouri. . . . , and have been able yo make an acceptable white wine from the Seibel 5279 and from Sevyard 5276, . . .
I planted six Pinot Chardonnay . . . . one Pinot Chardonnay survived until last year. . . . it never did obtain any growth beyond three feet . . . .There vines were not covered or protected in any way. The Ruby Cabernet also winter killed . . . I then grafted them on Baco #1 roots, . . .they would winter kill down to just a few buds from the graft at the ground level. . . . For the past two winters I have bud grafted the Ruby Cabernet on Baco#1 scions about three feet above the ground and laid them down, . . .I do not know yet whether they survived this winter . . . if they survive I may have enough for a five gallon batch of wine next fall. Last fall I had a bushel of Ruby Cabernet . . so added a like amount of Delaware, . . . and I have a fair rose wine which is not too foxey. . . .
Where may I obtain some Sereksiya, . . . rootings or cuttings?
Do you think it would be worthwhile for me to try to grow any Aligote or Gamay? . . . where could I obtain 10 rootings of each?
Today, we have an unexpected March snow , 2" on the ground and temperature 31. Hope you're having better weather in California.
