My Darling, Well I am mon the firing range. There are 3000 men camped here one mile from the range. It is 10 miles from camp. I didn't have to walk. I put my name on the sick book night before last. I was suppose to go the doctor and see about my knee. It gave me hell. Yesterday, the first Sarg. told me not to go as he thot I would me ok. I told him I didn't want to ruin the 4th of July parade by having to fall out on acct of my knee. Last night a bulletin came out for the detail for today. I was scheduled to ride out with a weapons truck. I rode out in a jeep. We had our pack, 3 mortars and a machine gun. Everybody else made the trip ok. No one fell out, but they were sure tired when they got here. They made the trip in 3 1/2 hrs. It sure was fun riding in a jeep. We made the trip in nothing flat. After the gang got here they had foot inspection. Then lining and setting up tents. Then chow. Then we walked up to the firing range and recd instructions for firing. Boy, I was never so hot in my life. No shade just have flat country. After that we marched back and cleaned rifles, and machine guns. After that chow again. I am writing this letter sitting in front of my tent. Ouch! a mosquito took me. Bet they will be lousy here tonite. Two men share a pup tent. We have no lights so I will soon have to close. I got a sweet letter from you tonite. I will attempt to answer it in the next day or so. I see by the bulletin board I an scheduled to shoot on the range tomorrow at 6:30 am. We get up at 5:15.I will shoot a rifle tomorrow a 30 Cal M1 Automatic. We have no facilities for taking a bath here. Boy will we stink in a short time. We are going to choose up sides and smell arm pits. Well dear, it is too dark to write more so I better quit. Take care of yourself, honey and I will write more later. Got to get my canteen filled up for tomorrow so I can get a drink. Sleep tight dear. Love always ClarenceLexicon
