Description

Letter from Sarah J. Henderson to Harry George discussing a Haida hat.Vol 1 P. 223E Dear Sir: Replying to your favor mailed to me on the 16th inst., will say that in my haste I used the word "Yakutat" when I should have said"Sitka hats", the term by which I have most frequently heard them mentioned. Referring to report of the Smithsonian Institution, I find that the distinguishing feature of a Haida hat is the absence of any ornamentation except that a variation of stitches used. All painted ^Alaska hats are classed as Tlinket; therefore two of hats in the photo are clearly Tlinket; the third (in the right hand corner) seems to be simply brown by reason of age, and and I believe it to be a Haida, Price $25.00 Hoping this explanation will be satisfactory. Yours very truly,
