Context

A. The envelope is addressed to Miss Rosa Estees, City. There is no postmark but it contains a blue ONE CENT stamp. Written on the page is black ink reads 'St. Joseph, Mailed in the city From First Baptist Church, Contents on next page'. B. 'Mail from 1st Baptist' To the Members and Friends of the First Baptist Church, Of St. Joseph, MO. DEAR BROTHERS, SISTERS AND FRIENDS Your Finance Committee, to whom you delegated the management of your current expenses, deem it their duty to inform you how they are succeeding, now that half the year has elapsed. At the beginning of our labors we found the church burdened with a debt of about twelve hundred dollars on previous years' current expenses. By collecting all that we could from the delinquent subscriptions, and by the liberality of our pastor, who donated to our church . . . . . . . . . . . . . . We reduced the current expense for the present year to the lowest possible limit, estimating them at twenty-hundred dollars. To defray this amount and the deficit before mentioned, we had a subscription list amounting to about eighteen hundred dollars, which, if every dollar is paid, . . . . . . . . . Some of you have subscribed nothing, possible because you have been personally appealed to. Some who have been solicited have subscribed nothing, without in our opinion assigning valid reasons. Some perhaps have subscribed less then they should, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . If any are are able to increase their subscription it is their plain duty to do so at once. We beg of those who subscribed, to do so now; We beg of those who are delinquent to pay up, and do it promptly. We are your servants; what will you have us do? Will you enable us to meet our solemn obligations, . . . . . . : or shall our church languish under a load of accumulating indebtedness. In conclusion, we ask you all to aid the Master's cause to the upmost extent of your ability, and do it quickly, for life's toil and sacrifices will soon be over. "The night cometh, wherein no man can work. FINANCE COMMITTEE July 1st, 1875.
