Letter from A.A. Bear to Harry George noting the shipment of baskets, securing Pima materials, and a Mohave-Apache plaque for sale.
Dear Sir:
Your recent favor was received and contents noted. In reply to your questions would say that the baskets which I sent you were made by the Mohave-Apache Indians. I've forgotten just what the figures were; but the one which is made of cotton wood: the white one, has some roosters or at least what are purported to e roosters in the figures.
Not being in constant communication with those who make the Pima baskets it may be a a matter of several weeks before I secure the baskets which you ask, and I shall have a friend of mine secure them. I feel satisfied that the choice will be of the best. I have written to him regarding and as he buys a great many there will be no difficulty in securing them.
The Gila River reserve is about twenty miles due South of Phoenix, and is occupied in the main by the Maricopa and Papago Indians, tho I believe there are a few Pima's and perhaps a small number of other Indians there.
I have an Apache-Mohave plaque which in my judgement is a very good one. Not having it here, it being on exhibition at the Indian School at Phoenix. I cannot give exact dimensions; but it is probably about four inches wider than the ones I sent you. It is one made by one of the older women and while the designs are not particularly suggestive, yet to my mind it represents what I call real "Indian" work I was made by a woman with one hand. Now if you care for a basket of that size and price, I shall send it, and if you don't like it, the return postage is all that it will cost you. The price is $7.75.
Yours very truly,
P. S. Am always glad to furnish any information.Subject
