Description

Vol I pg. 23LL Letter from A.A. Bear to Harry George noting he will look out for materials and discussing the Salt River Reservation. Dear Sir: Your courteous favor of the 28' ??? was received and contents noted with pleasure. When I said that the baskets were not what I should have liked to send you, I meant in conformity to your wishes for smaller baskets. I had hoped to send you three smaller ones instead of two larger. As to future orders I shall be delighted to keep my naked eye out for you. However if they don't come in any faster than they have during the past six weeks it may be sometime before I shall be able to find what I want for you. You there are baskets, good bad and indifferent with about ten percent good and three percent very good. To get the choice I must buy everything and it is a different proposition to dispose to 75 to 80 percent of them. The Salt River reservation is separate and distinct from this reserve tho not more than twenty miles distance. This people too are distinct from the McDowell Indians. The Salt River Indians are Pima's while those here are Apache. The Pima's also make baskets but an entirely different type. They have two styles of weave and a number of different shapes. The course weave of the Pima is a trifle less expensive than the Apache, but the very fine weave is much more expensive then the Apache which I sent you. I could probably secure specimens of the Pima if you should care for them. There's the figures on the baskets which I sent you. I remember them but cannot give you their significance. I shall question the maker at first opportunity. The maker's name is Nah quah' her husband is Qualla oucha. Hastily yours,
