Letter from C.W. Hoffman to Harry George noting he previously misspoke when saying he did not have any information about tribes from the Caddoan family, discussing Arikara baskets, and noting he will try and obtain a basket for him.
Dear Sir:
I have your letter of May 20th relative to securing Indian baskets in which it is stated that Arickara tribe of this reservation belongs to the Caddoan family. This fact was unknown to me, or I would have furnished you information along the line you desire in my former letter, as I am a member of the Arickara tribe myself.
The Arickara formally made two kinds of baskets, a burden basket and a baptismal basket. They no longer make them, but it is very probable that good specimens of them can be secured from some of the older Indians. They would probably cost in the neighborhood of $10.00 each. I will make inquiries relative to securing one of each kind of these baskets for you, and will let you learn the outcome of my inquiries as soon as possible.
Very respectfully,Subject
