Letter from Hamley & Co. to Harry George discussing the difference between Cayuse and Umatilla bags and describing a Te-Kes, or baby carrier.
Dear Sir;-
We have your favor of the 1st inst.
We have been enquiring from Indians as to the difference between Umatilla and Cayuse bags. As far as we can learn they are the same but if you want us to we can get you a good piece of Cayuse work but we fear it would be the same kind of work as the Umatilla bags which you have.
The baby carrier (Te-Kes') of which you spoke we shall have in a few days, at least hope to have, and shall send same to you by express as soon as we get it.
The carrier in the Nez Perce language is 'Te-Kes', accent on last syllable, and the act of the mother putting the child and carrier on her back is "Ë-sap'-ta-me'-ôts".
Yours very trulySubject
