Letter from Hamley & Co. to Harry George noting the shipment of a bag/trunk and a deer hide and describing the same.
Dear Sir;-
We shipped by mail, last Friday, the Cayuse bag or Trunk and the hide of an unborn deer. This hide is one out of seven which this old Cayuse woman has. She says that years ago they were used by the Indians as clothes, and were made into blankets, shawls, trousers, etc. These seven she says she has had for a great many years and if you want a miniature shawl she will make them up. Seven is all she has and it would take about twelve to make a full size shawl. She would not give a price on the shawl but wants you to say how much you will give. She is rather indifferent as to whether she sells them or not. She says the Indians never get these hides any more and did not want us to let any Indian even see it, so we kept it hid here in the store.
If you would rather have the large trunk than the small one you may hold the small one until we see if we can get the large one. Or if you care for neither you may return the one sent.
Yours very truly,Subject
