Letter from Harry George to A.A. Bear thanking him for the shipment of a Pima plaque and noting upcoming travel plans.
Dear Sir:
Many thanks for yours of the 14th, also the Pima plaque which was received this morning through the mail. I am delighted to get the specimen of their work and want to express my gratification at having you remember your promise to send me one of the small plaques if any was obtainable. I had no fixed idea in my mind as to size of the same but was rather inclined to believe it would be larger than this. However, I am very much pleased with it.
I expect to leave Tuesday, June 22nd to be absent 30 days in the far west. Extending to Sitka and Skagway, Alaska.
After my return home I may want to write you in regard to some other specimens that I want from your part of the country, notably baskets made by the Papagos and other Indians whose reservations are south of your own. I have completed by collections from all the reservations in Arizona with the exception of one of (illegible because it is typed over perforation) to call on you for such assistance as you can render though it may only be in an advisory way.
The New York draft which I am enclosing covers the cost of the plaque, plus the postage on same. I wish you would try to find out for me if the Maricopas, who I think are on the same reservation with the Papagos are makers of baskets. According to information I have, at one time they were makers of baskets but quit making them and went to making pottery. Perhaps some of your
friends in the service of the government can decide this question for me.
In refering to Prof. Manon's article in his annual report to the Smithsonian Institute for the year 1902 I find that the Maricopas are listed as makers of baskets. My understanding is they are on the same reservation with the Papagos, who are given as south of Tucson, Ariz.
Yours very trulySubject
