Description

Vol I pg. 23MM Letter from Harry George to A.A. Bear acknowledging the arrival of baskets and discussing the same. Dear Sirs: Many thanks for yours of the 23rd, also the two baskets which arrived in good condition, and with which I am very much pleased. I note that these two baskets are not what you would like to send me, and I give you permission to select two more for me that will be up to your expectations and send them to me. I will either send you the money before they are sent, or you can send the baskets to me and I will send you the money after wards. I wrote you some time ago asking by what tribe of Indiums these are made. In your letter of Oct. 14th, you stated the Indians under your care were Apache sometimes called Mohave, Tonto, or Yuma, principally Mohave. I note by my atlas that the Salt River is nearest to you, and I suppose these baskets are from that reservation. Will you kindly give me this information, also bear me in mind in regard to two more baskets. I wish I could read the meaning of the larger of the two baskets which is covered with figures of animals and men and women also other designs which are to me very interesting. I would like to know what the figure is on this basket, (if you remember it) that looks like an ostrich. If you remember this basket, try to give me an explanation of this and the other figures. I appreciate what you have done, and am pleased, or as the ladies say, "delighted" with the baskets. Yours very truly
