Letter from Harry George to DeWitt S. Harris

The image is a typewritten letter dated November 9, 1906, addressed to Mr. Hewitt C. Harris in Cherokee, N. Car. The sender inquires about the possibility of obtaining baskets with unique shapes reportedly made by the Cherokee Indians in the past, which seem no longer available for sale. The letter mentions that such baskets were crafted similarly to those made by the Louisiana Indians, though not as fine in texture. The sender expresses an interest in securing these specimens, which are likely no longer produced, and requests information on how to acquire them. The closing salutation is "Yours very truly."

Description

Vol 1 P. 229R Letter from Harry George to DeWitt S. Harris asking if Cherokees make shapes in baskets. Dear Sir: Various publications show that some time in the past the Cherokee Indians made shapes in baskets, which possibly are not for sale. I would like to know if there is any possibility of me being able to get in touch with one who has these shapes for sale. Several works published in the interest of basketry some years ago show that the Cherokees made baskets similar to the shapes that are made by the Louisiana Indians, though not as fine in texture. I am interested in trying to secure some of these specimens which perhaps are not now made, and will be pleased to hear from you covering this matter. Yours very truly,
