Two letters: one from Harry George to Major Lee Moorhouse, dated 4/21/1911 asking for his help in completing his basket collection;
the second is a reply from Major Moorhouse to Harry George dated 4/24/1911.
(1.)
Dear Sir:
A few days ago I wrote to the Superintendent of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, regarding the possibility of securing a specimen of basketry or other work made by the Cayuse Indians of the Waiilatpuau family. For some years I have been at a work trying to complete my collection of Indian baskets, and I have gotten to the point where same is very near complete from a linguistic standpoint. If you can aid me in any way it will be thoroughly appreciated and I will be pleased to send you a check covering all expenses and leave the selection to you or anyone to whom same may be given. I am anxious to complete my collection from a linguistic standpoint, as I find it is impossible to complete it from a tribal standpoint. The records of the United States show that there are hundreds of so called tribes and only about 58 linguistic families.
Thanking you in advance for attention to this, I remain,
yours very truly.
(2.)
My Dear Sir:---
I am in receipt of your inquiry for Cayuse basketry work and selected a couple of baskets made by the tribe and requested the dealers to send them to you per request together with the bill, which you can remit for direct to the firm. Our Indians here never made much of a specialty on basketry, their work, runs more on the bag line.
Trusting that you will be pleased with the baskets sent,
I am very sincerely,Subject
