Description

Vol 1 P. 235C Letter from James E. Henderson to Harry George noting he does not deal with the Croatan tribe, providing information about the difference between Croatans and Cherokees, and noting individuals to contact. Sir: The letters referred to you as having been written to Mr. Frank Kyselka calling for certain information relative to the Croatan Indians of Robinson County, N.C. have not been received and it is difficult for me to give you the information you seek. I will say, however, that this office does not have jurisdiction over the Croatan Indians and therefore there is very little information on file here. They are as a tribe entirely separate from the Cherokees and we have no record that they in earlier times had anything to do with the Cherokees and we have no record that they in earlier times had anything to do with the Cherokees. It is supposed the the Lost Colony of Roanoke went to live with these Indians. It is certain though that at a date we have no record of some whites were taken into this colony or band of Indians as some of them spoke English and showed to be of mixed blood when the first permanent white settlers came to this country. I have known a number of the Cratans but have never visited them in their homes . The young Indians , Sylvester Long Lance recently appointed to West Point by President Wilson is Croatan and not a Cherokee . So fars I know the Croatans have lost their language the same as have the Catawbas and some other eastern bands of Indians . Dak. Both If you want more accurate first hand information I would suggest that you write to James Mooney of the Department of Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C. or Mr. Charles F. Pierce, , Superintendent, Flandreau , South Dak. Both of these gentlemen have made an exhaustive study of the Croatan Indians. I regret very much that I am unable to give you more satisfactory information. Very respectfully,
