Letter from Julia A.E. Haley to Harry George describing the "History of the Early bright colored Indian Burial Chest".
In the early days. The Indians cremated their dead- They first dug large pits - building a fire in them - and then the body was placed over the flames - while the friends sat around the fire - dressed in their best war tog - mourning and making weird sounds - after the bodies were burned - the ashes were gathered - and put in a bright colored painted chest - a house built in which the chest was placed - along with the belongings of the deceased - food and everything the departed needed in life was placed in this. As the white people came into the country the land on which these houses stood was sold and and the houses torn down . The Indians then buried their dead in a cemetery - Chest made carved and painted by the Kok-Wou-Lou-Tribe
