Description

Letter from Mrs. J. Frohman to Harry George discussing a good luck rattle basket. Dated 12-29-190? Vol. I, pg. 147A My Dear Mr. George. Your few lines & check at hand, many thanks - Regarding the good luck rattle They are like the shape of the Mahahs - round & with cover. In the cover is a concealed rattle of pebbles that make a noise when you shake the cover. This is used or supposed to be a warning to the Indians if any one tries to take away their "good luck" or rattle basket they will hear the noise of the rattle when it shakes in the cover and if any one steals the "treasure" basket (they keep their treasures in it) the good luck will disappear. These baskets are made in South Eastern Alaska by 'Yankeetats". The colors vary. The one I have in kind for you is made of old "mulberry juice" which they used in coloring years ago - This is the only color in the design other is the natural color of grass or root that grows in Alaska - You can read about these in any book of Alaska baskets (Catalogue) The price is $6.00 I expect to leave for California about Jan 15th ^for 4 weeks, soyou had better write me at once about it & if you wish me to pick up any good baskets from Cal tribes while I am away - if so say about how much I am to spend & I feel that you can leave it to me how much can go in each basket. What is the highest price you will pay for good Cal- & you send me say $50.00 & wish to leave it
